The story
The Cockspur brand originates from the commercial activity of Valdemar Hanschell and emerged as a rum brand in Barbados from the late 19th century; the official site and historical sources place its foundation around 1884. During the 20th century ownership and corporate management underwent several changes (Hanschell Larson, Hanschell Inniss, acquisition by Goddard Enterprises in past years). In 2017 the brand ownership was transferred to Woodland Radicle, which indicated an intention to relaunch and expand the international presence while keeping production and bottling in Barbados.
Production philosophy
Cockspur emphasizes Caribbean tradition and continuity of production practices: use of coral-filtered water, aging in oak barrels and tropical maturation, with a lively brand image centered on the rooster symbol. The brand's stated approach aims to preserve the local character of the rum while expanding its distribution abroad.
Territory
Barbados (production and origin of the brand); the brand's administrative headquarters were moved to Woodland Radicle's base in St. George, Barbados.
Production method
Cockspur-labeled rum is distilled on its behalf at the West Indies Rum Distillery (contract production). The base is sugar cane molasses; the distillates are blended and matured in oak barrels prior to bottling in Barbados.
Distillation
Distillation carried out at the West Indies Rum Distillery on behalf of the brand; production is based on blends of rums distilled from molasses (the distillery uses a combination of pot stills and column stills to obtain different profiles for the blend).
Ageing
Maturation in oak barrels in a tropical environment with subsequent assembly/blending during or after ageing.
