Martell

Martell is a historic Cognac maison founded in Cognac (France) in 1715. It produces a range of artisanal cognacs based on the selection of eaux-de-vie from the region's crus, the double distillation of 'clear' wines and aging in fine-grained French oak. Among the best-known labels: Cordon Bleu, VS, VSOP Medaillon, XO and Blue Swift (VSOP finished in bourbon casks).

The story
Founded by Jean Martell in 1715 in the town of Cognac, Maison Martell is one of the oldest of the great Cognac maisons. Over the centuries the Maison has developed strong ties with specific crus of the region (including the Borderies and the Champagne crus), launched iconic releases such as Cordon Bleu (1912) and continues to combine tradition and innovation under the supervision of its cellar masters.
Production philosophy
Martell's philosophy is based on highlighting the terroir of the Cognac region, the purity of the distillate through the selection of 'clear' wines and careful blending that preserves elegance, finesse and organoleptic consistency. The Maison favors long‑term selection and aging practices to achieve balance and complexity.
Territory
Cognac region (Charente department), France; the Maison works with eaux-de-vie from several crus of the appellation, with particular attention to the Borderies and the Champagne crus.
Production method
Selection of low‑alcohol wines, double distillation in copper stills (Charentais pot still) exclusively from 'clear' wines (without lees), maturation in fine‑grained French oak casks and cellar finishing; subsequent blending of the eaux-de-vie by the maître de chai. Some expressions are finished in bourbon casks.
Distillation
Double distillation of 'clear' wines in copper stills (Charentais pot still); the Maison favors distilling wines free of sediment to obtain fine, clean eaux-de-vie.
Ageing
Aging in fine‑grained French oak casks (Tronçais-style) in the Maison's cellars; some expressions receive finishes in bourbon casks to add vanilla and toasted notes.
