Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Produced from cane molasses; differentiated fermentation (controlled fermentation for light rums, spontaneous/natural fermentation for heavy rums). Both column stills (for lighter/neutral components) and pot still components are used for richer expressions, followed by blending and maturation in charred American oak barrels (ex-bourbon) for aged releases.

Distillation

Combination of column still method (for lighter/neutral components) and pot still components (for richer expressions). Controlled fermentations are used for light rums and natural/spontaneous fermentations for heavy rums; the resulting distillates are then blended according to the desired profile.

Ageing

Mostly matured in charred American oak barrels (ex-bourbon). For some selected bottles or independent bottlings there have been releases with 'tropical' aging (continuous maturation in Jamaica) and 'continental' (further maturation/finishing in a European climate), allowing comparison between maturation in different climates.

Producer history Monymusk

The name derives from the eponymous sugar plantation (Monymusk Estate). The Monymusk brand is produced and blended by National Rums of Jamaica (NRJ) and is linked to the historic production facilities in the Monymusk/Clarendon area (Clarendon Distillers Ltd.), as well as to Long Pond and the Innswood facility as production and aging sites. NRJ oversaw the brand relaunch and the marketing of a line of rums under the Monymusk name.

Production philosophy

To preserve and enhance the traditional character of Jamaican rum through island-typical fermentations and blending, maintaining the so-called "Monymusk Taste" via established fermentation, distillation and aging practices, and offering expressions suitable for both everyday drinking and tasting.

Territory

Jamaica (mainly Clarendon Parish, with references to facilities in Long Pond and Innswood).

Awards and recognitions

Monymusk Classic Gold (Best in Class / Gold) and Monymusk Special Reserve (Gold) at the Miami Rum Festival (mentioned in the brand's official communication).
