Distillation and production

Production method

Wild myrtle berries are selected, cleaned and macerated in a hydroalcoholic solution for a period that can last up to three months; solids are then separated, the liquid further matures in stainless steel tanks, after which dilution with water and sugar, filtration and bottling take place. No artificial flavors or colorings are added.

Distillation

Maceration/infusion in a hydroalcoholic solution (maceration process of mirto; not a traditional distillation).

Producer history Zedda Piras

Founded by Francesco Zedda in 1854, the company started as a winemaking business in the Cagliari area and during the 20th century expanded into the production of spirits and liqueurs. Zedda Piras products received international recognition as early as the late 19th century. Family ownership was maintained until the 1990s: in 1994 Zedda Piras joined the Sella & Mosca group. In the early 2000s the brand entered the Campari Group (official Campari documentation indicates the acquisition was formalized in 2002; historical archives also reference 2001). Mirto is produced at the Alghero facility; on 18 December 2025 Campari announced the sale of the Zedda Piras business to Illva Saronno Holding with closing expected in the first half of 2026.

Production philosophy

Highlighting tradition and the connection to Sardinia: use of hand-picked wild myrtle berries, simple and natural ingredients, and respect for traditional maceration processes to produce a liqueur that expresses the character of the Mediterranean scrub.

Territory
