Winery history
The Johannisberg estate became the property of the Hesse family following a purchase made on behalf of the Hessische Hausstiftung in 1957. Since then the estate has been managed under the oversight of the Landgraf von Hessen family and operated by professionals appointed by the estate. Over the years it has become a benchmark in the Rheingau for quality wines, with ongoing investment in its vineyards and winemaking.
Production philosophy
An approach focused on respect for the soil and minimal intervention: "as much as necessary, as little as possible." Attention is placed on careful vineyard management and on highlighting Riesling as the central variety, with winemaking aimed at expressing the character of each vineyard.
Terroir and vineyards
Located in Johannisberg in the Rheingau, the estate cultivates vineyards in classic sites of the region, including Johannisberger Klaus, Winkeler Hasensprung, Winkeler Jesuitengarten, Doosberg and others. The soils include deep loess, partly stony loess-loam and the gravelly and quartzitic deposits typical of the area.
