This rum from Fiji, distilled in 2019 and matured for five years in selected casks that held coffee liqueur, offers an immediate and recognizable aromatic profile: notes of roasted coffee and cacao intertwine with hints of dark caramel and molasses, with a light vanilla sweetness that softens everything. The profile is warm but controlled; the alcohol supports without ever overpowering, leaving room for a weave of toasted wood and delicate spices that make the sip enveloping and well structured.
On the palate it shows a rounded texture, with soft tannins and a persistence that brings back the coffee‑chocolate pairing at the finish. It is a rum suited both to tasting neat, with a single ice cube to open its aromas, and to use in cocktails where a roasted, warm element is sought. Natural pairings include chocolate confections, coffee desserts, or aged cheeses: simple solutions that enhance its richness without masking its personality.

Brand
Planteray
FranceSince 1999
Planteray is Maison Ferrand's rum brand led by founder and master blender Alexandre Gabriel. The brand highlights the different terroirs of rum (Caribbean, Latin America, Indian/Pacific Ocean) and offers a range from bar blends to vintage releases and single cask bottlings, often featuring double maturation: a period of tropical aging in the region of origin followed by a final finish in Ferrand casks in France.
- Brand evolution from Plantation to Planteray (transition begun in 2024).
- Terroir-driven approach with rums selected from historic distilleries (e.g. Clarendon, Long Pond, Trinidad Distillers, WIRD).
- Practice of double maturation (tropical aging + finishing in France in Ferrand casks).
- Wide range: from bar expressions to premium blends and limited vintage single casks.
- Involvement and role of Alexandre Gabriel as founder and master blender.

The story
Originally launched as Plantation in the late 1990s and developed by Alexandre Gabriel within Maison Ferrand, the brand gradually expanded its range with blends, vintage releases and single casks sourced in collaboration with historic distilleries (for example Clarendon and Long Pond in Jamaica, Trinidad Distillers, West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados). From 2024 the brand began transitioning its name from Plantation to Planteray, a decision publicly announced by the owner.
Distillation
Various: Planteray bottles and blends rums distilled at different facilities; methods include both pot still (including repeated/double‑retort pot stills for certain releases) and column still, depending on the distillery of origin.
Ageing
Double maturation: initial aging in the place of origin (tropical climate, often in ex‑bourbon) followed by a period of finishing/aging in France in Ferrand casks (ex‑Cognac) or other selected casks (e.g. Pedro Ximénez, special finishes).
