Unicum is a Hungarian amaro/herbal liqueur produced and marketed by the Zwack group; it is known for its secret recipe based on more than 40 herbs and spices and for its bitter, digestive character.
According to the brand's official history, the Unicum recipe dates back to the late 18th century (tradition places it around 1790) and has been part of the Zwack family for generations. The name was commercially registered at the end of the 19th century; production experienced interruptions and nationalizations in the 20th century, but after the return of Zwack family members production was resumed and reorganized, returning the brand to the family's hands and maintaining production at the historic site in Budapest.
Production philosophy
