The story
Modern production at Arran began in the 1990s: the Lochranza distillery was built and commissioned in the mid-1990s, with the first official distillations dated 1995. The company, commercially known as Isle of Arran Distillers, later opened a second facility (Lagg) for peated spirit production. Over time it has developed a range of single malts with both age-stated and no-age-statement releases, wine-cask finishes and a line of cream liqueur.
Production philosophy
Emphasises a craft, natural approach: use of pure local water, selected malt, maturation in quality casks and the absence of added colouring and, for many bottlings above a certain strength, of chill filtration. The brand highlights its island identity and the quality of raw materials.
Territory
Isle of Arran (Lochranza and, for peated production, Lagg), Scotland. Production is linked to the island environment and local resources such as water from Loch Na Davie.
Production method
Traditional single malt production: use of malted barley (selected varieties), local spring water (Loch Na Davie), fermentation in wooden washbacks and double distillation in copper pot stills. Use of different cask types for maturation and bottling mainly at 46% ABV or at cask strength for some expressions.
Distillation
Double distillation in copper pot stills; fermentation in wooden washbacks; traditional single malt process.
Ageing
Maturation in oak casks that previously held bourbon, sherry, port and other wines; use of quarter casks and special cask finishes for some expressions.
