Producer history Asbach

In 1892 Hugo Asbach founded the "Export Compagnie für deutschen Cognac" in Rüdesheim am Rhein with the aim of creating a quality German brandy. In 1907 he registered the "Asbach Uralt" trademark and helped introduce the term "Weinbrand" as the German designation for cognac; after World War I the use of the word "Cognac" was banned for German producers and in 1923 the designation "Weinbrand" was incorporated into German wine law. During the 20th century Asbach became one of the best-known names in the German Weinbrand scene; since 2002 the company has been part of the Semper idem Underberg AG group.
