Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Production of single malt from malted barley; distillation in copper pot stills (wash and spirit pot stills) with occasional triple‑distilled editions. The distillery uses both externally sourced malted barley and, in special releases, malt produced in its own floor maltings (Malting Season). Maturations are carried out in multiple cask types and often employ blending and finishing techniques across different casks.

Distillation

Distillation in copper pot stills (traditional configuration: wash and spirit stills); presence of triple‑distilled expressions for specific releases.

Ageing

Maturation across a wide selection of casks (three‑cask maturation for the core 10/12-year range; four‑cask selections for longer age statements). Use of both ex‑bourbon casks and wine and sherry casks for finishes and finishing.

Producer history BenRiach

BenRiach was established at the end of the 19th century on the hill of the former Riach farm; production began in the late 1800s but the distillery experienced periods of closure and reopening. Over subsequent decades it passed through various owners and was partially inactive for years while retaining its floor maltings. In 2004 it was relaunched by an independent ownership including figures from the whisky sector and, in 2016, the Brown‑Forman group completed the acquisition of the BenRiach Distillery Company.

Production philosophy

BenRiach combines respect for traditional practices (such as floor maltings) with a strong inclination for experimentation: use of peated and unpeated spirits, occasional triple distillation for special editions and maturation in a wide range of casks from different countries to create complex, layered expressions.
