Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Production of single malt from barley malt and water from the River Bladnoch; fermentation in washbacks and distillation in pot stills. Maturation takes place in various types of casks and expressions are assembled and finished according to the desired flavour profile.

Distillation

Pot stills (discontinuous) — the historic layout and modern equipment include washbacks and stills used for single malt production.

Ageing

Maturation in wooden casks using ex-bourbon and sherry casks (including Oloroso and PX), plus finishes/use of Californian red wine casks and virgin American oak; vatting and careful cask selection are applied for each expression.

Producer history Bladnoch

Bladnoch was established in 1817 when John and Thomas McClelland obtained a licence to distil in the Scottish Lowlands. Over the centuries the distillery experienced periods of closure and multiple changes of ownership; it re-opened several times and, after a long idle phase, was acquired by entrepreneur David Prior in 2015. Following refurbishment, production resumed in 2017 and the distillery expanded its offering with single malt collections and the Pure Scot blended brand. A new Visitor Centre was opened in 2019.

Production philosophy

Bladnoch adopts a taste-first, innovation-driven approach, emphasizing local raw materials (water from the River Bladnoch and British malt) and careful cask selection to create whiskies with Lowland character while exploring cask and blending experiments.

Territory

Bladnoch is located in the Scottish Lowlands, near Wigtown / Newton Stewart (Dumfries and Galloway); it is the southernmost distillery in Scotland.

Awards and recognitions
