The modern incarnation of the Bulleit brand was founded by Tom Bulleit in 1987, inspired by 19th-century family recipes. Over the years production has also been handled through third-party contracts; in 2017 Bulleit opened a new production facility in Shelbyville, Kentucky, which houses production and a visitor centre. The brand is today managed and distributed globally by Diageo.

To continue the family tradition of so-called 'Frontier Whiskey', emphasizing a flavor profile defined by a high rye content that provides spicy, full-bodied notes—suitable both for mixing and for tasting neat.
