Distillation and production

Production method

Natural fermentation of selected masses/fruit, artisanal distillation with sensory evaluation and separation of fractions (heads/heart/tails) by the family and master distiller. All production phases (distillation, ageing, bottling) are carried out at the Zug facility.

Distillation

Artisanal distillation with natural fermentation of fruit masses; sensory selection of distillation fractions (heads/heart/tails) to achieve aromatic purity and intensity; processes concentrated on site at the Zug facility.

Ageing

Variable maturation depending on the product; 'Vieille' versions are aged for months or years in wood (e.g., barrique) to harmonize and soften the character of the fruit spirits.

Producer history Etter

The earliest traces of kirsch production linked to the Etter family date back to 1823. The professional distillery was founded in Zug by Paul Etter in 1870. Over the decades the company has remained family-run, expanded its range beyond kirsch (starting in the 1980s) and moved to modern facilities at Chollermüli/Zug in 1980. Recent developments include the JOHNETT whisky (produced since 2007 and marketed from 2010), the RUM1823 label tied to the 150th anniversary and the introduction of gin to the range in 2021. In 2024 ownership was updated with Eveline and Gabriel Galliker-Etter as sole owners.

Production philosophy

Strong quality focus: exclusive use of selected Swiss fruit, full in-house control of the supply chain (fermentation, distillation, ageing and bottling) and artisanal care in selecting distillation fractions so that every spirit carries the "signature" of Etter.

Territory

Headquarters and production in Zug (Chollerstrasse, city of Zug), Switzerland. Raw materials come from Swiss regions considered most suitable, including orchards around Lake Zug for cherries.

Awards and recognitions

Numerous gold medals at DistiSuisse competitions across different years (e.g. Vieille Kirsch, Vieille Orange, Premium Williams, Grappa Ticino and others). Awarded 'Distillery of the Year' (DistiSuisse 2023/2024) and additional recognitions listed in the company's awards section.
