The story
The original Glengyle plant was built in the 19th century by William Mitchell; the distillery operated until the 1920s. The premises remained in local use for decades and in 2000 were acquired by Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd; after a period of refurbishment the first modern distillation took place in 2004 and production has since resumed under the Kilkerran brand (the name Glengyle has not been used for the single malt due to trademark rights).
Production philosophy
To restore and celebrate Campbeltown's whisky heritage with a traditional, community-oriented approach. Ownership has been managed to support the local community and the distillery positions itself as part of the region's revival.
Territory
Campbeltown, the Mull of Kintyre peninsula, the historic Campbeltown whisky region (Scotland).
Production method
Produces single malt (malted barley). Main releases are matured in bourbon and sherry casks (e.g. Kilkerran 12 Anni: maturation in 70% ex-bourbon and 30% ex-sherry). More specific technical details on distillation are not specified in the official sources consulted.
Ageing
Maturation in casks (e.g. a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry for some expressions such as the 12 Anni).
