The story
The Nonino family has been distilling since 1897, based in Percoto (Friuli Venezia Giulia). Over the years the family introduced major innovations: in 1973 Benito and Giannola Nonino created the first Monovitigno® grappa by distilling the pomace of a single grape variety separately. Leadership passed from Benito and Giannola to their daughters (including Cristina, Antonella and Elisabetta), who expanded the range to include amari, grape eaux-de-vie and aperitifs, promoting grappa also as a cocktail ingredient.
Production philosophy
A pursuit of quality, enhancement of native grape varieties and respect for the territory. Production favors artisanal interventions, control of the raw material supply chain and methods that preserve the original aromas of the grape cluster and fruit.
Territory
Friuli Venezia Giulia (mainly the Percoto / Pavia di Udine area; experimental vineyards and aging warehouses across the region).
Awards and recognition
Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards - Spirit Brand/Distillery of the Year (award presented at the ceremony on January 27, 2020 for the year 2019).
Production method
Rapid selection and collection of fresh pomace, controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, discontinuous (batch) distillation in copper steam stills with head and tail cuts, and natural aging in barriques and small casks under seal. Bottling without added colorants.
Distillation
Artisanal discontinuous (batch) distillation in copper steam stills with head and tail cuts; master distillation control.
Ageing
Natural aging under seal in barriques and small casks; bottling without added colorants. "Invecchiata" = minimum 12 months; "Riserva" = minimum 18 months (or as indicated on the label).
