Distillation and production

Production method

Typical Scottish single malt production with a plant equipped with wash stills and spirit stills (3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills according to sources); historically it also had mechanical maltings on site. Extensive use of sherry casks for maturation.

Distillation

Plant with 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills; distillation according to the traditional single malt method (pot stills).

Ageing

Maturation predominantly in sherry casks; core releases are 100% sherry-matured and some limited editions are released in first-fill sherry butts (European oak).

Producer history Tamdhu

Founded between 1896 and 1897 by a group of blenders, Tamdhu began production in 1897. During the 20th century the distillery experienced some periods of inactivity. It belonged to Highland Distillers (Edrington group) until the temporary closure announced in 2010; in 2011 the site was acquired by Ian Macleod Distillers, which relaunched production in the early 2010s. In recent years the range has developed around 100% sherry-matured expressions and limited releases.

Production philosophy

To highlight a Speyside style strongly influenced by sherry-cask maturation, focusing on the quality of the wood and long ageing to achieve a single malt rich in fruity and sweet notes.

Territory

Knockando, Speyside, Scotland (United Kingdom). Local spring water (Tamdhu Spring / Knockando Burn).
