The story
The name evokes the illicit rye production practised in Templeton (Iowa) during Prohibition. The modern brand was relaunched in the 21st century as Templeton Rye; historically much of the whisky sold under the brand was distilled in the state of Indiana (known supplier: MGP) and later aged or bottled in Templeton. In 2015 the producer reached a settlement over disputes concerning how origin and process were communicated; in subsequent years the company invested in its own facility in Templeton, IA, where it now carries out aging, bottling and partially distillation.
Production philosophy
To rediscover and honor Templeton's local rye whiskey tradition by combining regional historical roots with modern production practices; emphasis on on-site production and selected aged expressions.
Territory
Templeton, Iowa (USA). Historically also production links with distilleries in Indiana for some spirit supplies used in the original blends.
Awards and recognition
Rye Whiskey of the Year — London Spirits Competition 2025 (Templeton 10 Year Single Barrel).
Production method
Official communications indicate that some expressions were in the past composed using spirits distilled in Indiana and that the process includes blending, aging in Templeton warehouses and on-site bottling. In recent years the company opened and expanded a facility in Templeton, IA, where distillation, aging and bottling of distillery releases take place.
Ageing
Aging in charred new American oak barrels (New American Oak); the barrels are warehoused in Templeton, IA, where local seasonal variations are cited as a maturation factor.
