The story
Verveine du Velay is a herbal liqueur born in the 19th century: the original recipe is attributed to Joseph Rumillet-Charretier (1859). In 1886 production passed to the Pagès family, who later gave their name to the distillery. The brand is today managed within the Vedrenne group, which maintains production and the preservation of the Velay tradition.
Production philosophy
To preserve a historic recipe tied to the Velay territory, promoting local cultivation of verbena and the use of traditional methods (maceration, distillation in copper pot stills and ageing in barrels) to obtain a herbal liqueur faithful to the original flavour.
Territory
Puy‑en‑Velay / Velay, Haute‑Loire department, Auvergne‑Rhône‑Alpes region, France.
Production method
The preparation combines maceration of aromatic plants, distillation in copper pot stills and subsequent ageing in oak barrels; the process takes several months and follows the traditional recipe that uses locally cultivated verbena together with a bouquet of other plants and spices.
Distillation
Maceration of the plants followed by distillation in copper pot stills.
Ageing
Ageing in oak barrels for a minimum period (reported as at least 12 months in the official documentation).
