Papalin is a rum project/brand focused on assemblages (blended rums) created and curated by Luca Gargano through Velier and the joint venture La Maison & Velier. The range favors regional blends aged in the countries of origin (tropical ageing) with releases dedicated to Jamaica, Haiti, Réunion and other origins.
Papalin originated as a blend conceived by Luca Gargano in 2013, initially composed of rums from Cuba, Venezuela and a small share of Caroni. The brand was relaunched and developed under the La Maison & Velier umbrella from 2021 with a series of regional editions (Jamaica, Haiti, Réunion) and small batches; official La Maison & Velier materials describe Papalin as a project dedicated to assemblages and a "tropical dependent bottler".
Production philosophy
To highlight geographic assemblages and ageing in the place of production, working directly with partner distilleries to select and mature spirits in their vats/warehouses before bottling.
Territory
Brand managed by Velier (Italy) and La Maison & Velier (France/Italy joint venture) with selections of rums sourced from producing countries such as Jamaica, Haiti, Réunion, Cuba, Venezuela and Caroni (Trinidad) depending on the editions.
Production method
Selection and vatting of casks from different distilleries; the blends are planned and executed in collaboration with local partners and mature in the distilleries' official facilities (tropical ageing). Technical specifications (still type, blend percentages) vary depending on the release.
Distillation
Variable: components of the blends come from different distilleries and include distillates obtained with pot stills and other methods depending on origin; the specific method depends on each release.
Ageing
Ageing carried out mainly in the distilleries' warehouses in the countries of origin (tropical ageing); some releases indicate finishes in ex-bourbon or ex-sherry casks.
