The harvest of the Pinot Noir produced by Kistler Vineyardrs is carried out in the middle of the night, in the dark and, especially, with cool temperatures. The result is fresher grapes that retain their acidity better. It may seem very strange if you don't know much about wine, but a true connoisseur is aware that grapes are in a different physiological state in the coolness of three in the morning than in the middle of the day.

The Pinot Noir is fermented spontaneously in open tanks and the must is aged in French oak barrels for a maximum of 18 months.

In the glass it shows a beautiful ruby red color; the aromas that rise to the nose are intense, characterized by floral and fruity scents of red fruits, with smoky hints. The taste is rich, medium-bodied and rather dry, the perceived acidity is medium-high, with medium tannins and intensity, the fruity hints of plum and currant open to a spicy finish of black pepper.

A wine that goes perfectly with savory dishes such as polenta with porcini mushrooms, roasted game or Moroccan braised salmon.

Discover the story and wines of Kistler Vineyards.

A California winery focused on site-driven Chardonnay and elegant Pinot Noir, with a strong emphasis on viticulture and native yeast fermentations.
Region: Contea di Sonoma, California
Country: Stati Uniti
Founded: 1978
Grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Use of an heirloom clone of Chardonnay propagated across many vineyards. A network of site-specific vineyards that supply many single-vineyard labels. Low-intervention winery approach with fermentations using indigenous yeasts. Long-term collaboration with growers and vineyards, including those planted in partnership. Management transition began in 2008 with Jason Kesner and was consolidated after 2017.
Winery history
Founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler, Kistler grew as a family-owned winery dedicated to producing wines that reflect their place of origin. In 2008 Bill Price acquired a stake, and that same year Jason Kesner joined the team as a cellar assistant; Kesner later became head winemaker during the generational transition. Steve Kistler retired at the end of 2017. The estate also opened a tasting facility in the 2010s.
Production philosophy
Terroir-driven approach: use of selected plant material, viticulture guided by soil quality and site exposure, fermentations with indigenous yeasts and minimal cellar intervention to let the site express itself.
Terroir and vineyards
Vineyards span from Carneros to Sonoma Valley, and from the Russian River Valley to the Sonoma Coast; the winery states that it works with seventeen vineyards across five appellations and produces bottles sourced from multiple site-designated parcels.
