Winery history Château La Gurgue

The history of Château La Gurgue is closely tied to the village of Margaux: land assembled in the 19th century by local owners and subsequently passing through various hands. In 1978 Jacques Merlaut acquired the estate and entrusted it to his daughter Bernadette, who revitalised the vineyards and the winery. Since 1993 management has been in the hands of Claire Villars-Lurton; the estate shares infrastructure and technical know‑how with Château Ferrière and, under the family's guidance, has moved towards agroecological practices and organic and biodynamic certification.

Production philosophy

Family tradition and respect for the land: the stated goal is to highlight the distinctive qualities of Margaux’s terroir through sustainable viticultural practices and winemaking that combines traditional and experimental vessels to express aromatic clarity and balance.

Terroir and vineyards

Appellation Margaux. The vineyards lie on deep gravel with calcareous marl and are surrounded by parcels belonging to the area's grands crus; the location provides a dominant Cabernet base typical of the Margaux style.

Awards and recognitions

Highlighted among the most typical wines of Margaux in the "Essai sur le style de Margaux".
