Distillation and production

Production method

Marula drupes are hand-picked, washed and separated from the kernel; the pulp is then crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The fermented wash is distilled (using column stills) to produce the marula spirit, which is subsequently matured in French oak barrels. The matured spirit is finally blended with fresh cream and sugar to create Amarula cream.

Distillation

Column distillation (column still) for the marula distillate.

Ageing

Maturation of the marula spirit in French oak barrels for about two years, then blended with cream.

Producer history Amarula

Amarula originates from the use of the marula fruit, a wild species native to the sub-equatorial plains of Africa. The marula spirit was developed and commercialized in the 1980s; the Amarula cream was introduced to the market in the late 1980s. The brand was historically managed by the Southern Liqueur Company / Distell and, following Distell's acquisition, is now part of the Heineken Beverages / HEINEKEN group (transaction completed in 2023).

Production philosophy

The brand emphasizes the African roots of the product: hand-harvested marula fruit, support and empowerment of the local communities involved in collection, and promotion of elephant conservation through research initiatives funded by the brand / Amarula Trust.

Territory

Origin and production in South Africa; marula fruit comes from the sub-equatorial regions of southern Africa.
