Explore the spirits, production style and story of Borsci.
Borsci is a historic amaro brand originating from San Marzano di San Giuseppe (Puglia). Best known for Elisir San Marzano Borsci, it has nineteenth-century origins and today the brand is managed and produced under the control of Gruppo Caffo 1915.
Current production is based on infusions/herbal infusions; official sources indicate that Gruppo Caffo supplies a herbal infusion produced at the Limbadi facility for the preparation of the liqueur, which is then processed and bottled within the group.
Producer history Borsci
The product takes its name from the arbëreshe Borsci family of San Marzano di San Giuseppe. The recipe for the Elisir was refined and put into production by Giuseppe Borsci around 1840. After a period of corporate difficulties culminating in bankruptcy and suspension of activities in 2009–2012, the brand and operations were acquired/leased and relaunched by Gruppo Caffo (management began in 2013, with a subsequent definitive transfer of ownership/relaunch according to sources).
Production philosophy
To enhance a traditional recipe with local and eastern roots, preserving the historic identity of Elisir San Marzano and integrating it into Gruppo Caffo’s broader product range, with attention to the liquor heritage of Southern Italy.
Territory
Origin: San Marzano di San Giuseppe (province of Taranto, Puglia). The brand is today managed by Gruppo Caffo (with facilities in Calabria), which has relaunched the production and distribution of the historic Apulian product.
