Founded in 1839 by Sir Alexander Matheson on the shores of the Cromarty Firth (Alness), The Dalmore passed to the Mackenzie family in the second half of the 19th century; the distillery suffered heavy damage after an explosion linked to wartime activities in 1920 and remained family-owned until its acquisition by Whyte & Mackay in 1960.
