Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Production based on blends of distillates obtained from both pot stills and columns; blending and bottling carried out on-site. Predominant use of molasses bases, with documented experiments also using fresh cane juice. Tropical aging in various barrel types and practice of double maturation/finish for some expressions. The distillery has also documented technical experiments (e.g. vacuum distillation and new pot still designs).

Distillation

Blending of distillates from pot stills and columns; blending, maturation and bottling carried out on-site; experiments with vacuum distillation reported in technical interviews.

Ageing

Tropical aging with primary maturation in ex-bourbon barrels and frequent finishes or double maturations in fortified wine casks (Madeira, Oloroso/sherry, Port) or other woods; élevage practices used to layer aromas.

Producer history Foursquare

The Seale family's commercial roots in rum date back to the 20th century; R.L. Seale & Company is documented as a family business active in the sector. The production site occupies the area of a historic island sugarworks. The modern facility known as Foursquare was refitted and started operating as a distillery in the 1990s (operational from the mid-1990s) under Seale family ownership; operations are currently led by Richard Seale, the family's fourth generation.

Production philosophy

Focus on quality and transparency: production of rum in purity (single blended profile), attention to aging techniques and a refusal of practices that alter the spirit's character (consistent with the company's public statements limiting additives and preserving product integrity). Strong emphasis on controlled experimentation and on valuing terroir and élevage techniques.

Territory

Saint Philip (parish), Barbados; the plant stands on the site of a former historic sugarworks on the island and includes production and visitor/heritage activities tied to the local tradition.

Awards and recognitions

Among public recognitions: IWSC Rum Producer Trophy (2024) and numerous international awards granted to Foursquare expressions in industry competitions; some ECS bottlings have received high scores and medals at international level.
