Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Traditional single malt production: weekly arrival of malted barley, milling, mashing in a historic cast-iron mashtun, extended fermentation in washbacks, double distillation and maturation in on-site dunnage warehouses. The water used comes from Crosshill Loch.

Distillation

Traditional double distillation in copper pot stills, collecting the new make at around 71% ABV and filling casks at about 63.5% ABV.

Ageing

Maturation in casks with on-site ageing in dunnage warehouses, with assemblies and finishes for some expressions.

Producer history Glen Scotia

The distillery was founded as Scotia Distillery in 1832 and, despite the many ups and downs of the local industry, has remained one of the few production sites in Campbeltown. Over time it has preserved period structural elements (cast-iron mashtun, washbacks, stillhouse and dunnage warehouse) and today is part of the Loch Lomond Group, which manages its production and commercialisation.

Production philosophy

Production oriented to the Campbeltown tradition: preserving local character through artisanal methods, on-site maturation and a balance between American (bourbon) casks and sherry or other wood finishes to enrich the aromatic profile without overpowering the malt signature.

Territory

Campbeltown, Kintyre Peninsula, Argyll, Scotland (United Kingdom). Official address: 12 High Street, Campbeltown PA28 6DS.
