Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Integrated production including traditional pot stills, the distinctive Lomond/straight‑neck stills and continuous column stills (Coffey/column still) for grain production. This mix of equipment allows the distillery to produce different types of new make (malt and grain) and to experiment with different cask finishes.

Distillation

Combined use of traditional pot stills, Lomond/straight‑neck type stills (which allow greater control/rectification) and continuous column stills (Coffey/column). The combination enables production of both malt and grain whisky on the same site.

Ageing

Maturation in oak casks with extensive use of different cask types and finishes; the range includes expressions matured in American oak (first‑fill/refill/re‑charred), finishes in Oloroso sherry casks, Rioja-style cask finishes and other dedicated maturation regimes.

Producer history Loch Lomond

The brand and the modern production linked to the Alexandria site date back to the 1960s (the current distillery was started in the late 1960s), while the area has a whisky-making history intertwined with historic facilities such as Littlemill. The plant has experienced closures and relaunches (production resumed in the 1980s) and over time has expanded capacity and production sites, integrating malt and grain production, blending and bottling within the Loch Lomond group. In recent years the company has gone through ownership changes and investments that supported its international expansion.

Production philosophy

Experimentation and versatility: the house aims to obtain very different flavour profiles by using various types of stills and distillation routes, controlling all production stages in-house to offer a broad portfolio (single malt, single grain, blended) while maintaining a focus on quality, consistency and stylistic innovation.

Territory

Lomond Estate, Alexandria (Dunbartonshire), Scotland. The distillery is located on the upper edge of the Lowland/Highland boundary, with access to the resources typical of the area around Loch Lomond.

Awards and recognitions

Recognised as Most Awarded Distillery at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2023; awarded Scotch Whisky Producer of the Year by the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2024.
