Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Mash bill based on soft red winter wheat as the flavour grain, use of local limestone-source water and an heirloom proprietary yeast strain. Distillation performed on copper column stills (equipment supplied by Vendome), double distillation, aging in American oak barrels, and hand application of the red wax on each bottle.

Distillation

Double distillation on copper column stills (Vendome Copper & Brass Works equipment); process focused on producing a clean distillate while maintaining the desired flavor profile.

Ageing

Age-to-taste maturation in new American oak barrels; barrels are seasoned before use, char level is selected to develop vanilla notes, and barrels are rotated manually to even out exposure to temperature variations. Typically the whiskey reaches the desired profile in about 6–7 years.

Producer history Maker's Mark

The brand was created by William 'Bill' Samuels Sr., who at Star Hill Farm near Loretto (KY) developed a recipe that uses wheat instead of the more common rye. The distillery has been operational since the mid-1950s: the symbolic 'burning' of the old recipe is dated 1953 and the first hand-dipped bottle was completed in 1958. Management has remained in the Samuels family and the brand today is part of the global group owned by Beam Suntory / Suntory Global Spirits.

Production philosophy

Strong focus on flavor and quality: handcrafted 'one at a time' production, fidelity to the original recipe, emphasis on place of origin (Star Hill Farm) and distinctive hands-on practices such as hand-dipping the wax and manual barrel rotation.

Territory

Star Hill Farm, Loretto, Kentucky, United States (rural area of Kentucky oriented to bourbon production).
