Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Production based on traditional Armagnac distillation with armagnacais stills; the company also operates charentais stills. Cutting decisions are determined through continuous tastings by the master distiller. The eaux-de-vie are then aged in selected French oak pièces, following a path that uses new casks followed by 'roux' casks before final blending.

Distillation

Traditional Armagnac distillation on armagnacais stills (heads/heart/tails cuts determined through tastings by the cellar master); the facility also has charentais stills.

Ageing

Aging in French oak pièces (approximately 420 L) with selection of fine-grain wood and light toasting; maturation path includes new casks followed by 'roux' casks prior to final assemblages.

Producer history Samalens

Maison Samalens was founded in 1882 and from the outset has been dedicated to distillation, blending and aging of eaux-de-vie in the heart of Bas-Armagnac. Over time it has kept a strong link to traditional practices (historic cellars, century-old stills) and today is part of the Mandracore group, which brings together several French wine and spirits brands.

Production philosophy

Combine tradition and innovation: highlight the power and aging potential of Armagnac while preserving its aromatic identity, and at the same time experiment with new tasting experiences and more contemporary formats.

Territory

Laujuzan, Bas-Armagnac, department of Gers, southwest France (historic region of Gascony).
