The site was originally a mill; conversion to a distillery took place at the end of the 19th century (commonly cited around 1891) and the name Glenisla-Glenlivet was changed to Strathmill after an acquisition by W&A Gilbey in the subsequent period. During the 20th century ownership passed through the various mergers that led to the current control by Diageo. Much of the production has historically been destined for blends, while official single malt releases have been rare and sporadic (e.g. releases in the Flora & Fauna series and some Special Releases).
