Producer history Tomatin

The distillery's first formal registration dates to 8 June 1897; after an initial closure in 1906 it reopened in 1909. In the post-war years the facility expanded significantly and in 1974 reached a peak with 23 stills and a capacity around 12.5 million litres per year, becoming at the time the world's largest malt distillery. The industry crisis of the 1980s brought financial difficulties: in February 1986 Tomatin was acquired by the Japanese companies Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co., with Takara remaining the majority shareholder. From the 2000s the distillery downsized its equipment (reducing stills to 12) and shifted strategy, placing greater emphasis on single malt expressions and maturation experiments (e.g. the Cù Bòcan line and numerous core/limited releases based on different cask types).
