Historic winery in Montalcino, considered one of the creators and promoters of Brunello di Montalcino, renowned for its traditional style and for using Sangiovese in pure form. (https://www.biondisanti.it/?utm_source=openai)
Region: Toscana
Country: Italia
Grapes: Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso, clone BBS11)
Regarded as one of the founding producers and driving forces behind Brunello di Montalcino. Made from Sangiovese Grosso and the selected BBS11 clone. Historic estate: Tenuta Il Greppo, Montalcino, Tuscany. A winemaking style grounded in tradition, with extended aging to ensure longevity.
Winery history
The family's connection to the Il Greppo estate is documented from the 19th century: the first experiments with wines made exclusively from Sangiovese are attributable to members of the Santi family, while the modern Brunello di Montalcino is commonly attributed to Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, with the first documented version dating to 1888. Throughout the 20th century, family ownership and management consolidated the winery's reputation.
Production philosophy
Focus on traditional practices and a commitment to longevity: production exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso, with fermentations and extended aging in casks and in bottle to produce wines suited to aging. The estate pays careful attention to grape selection and vineyard management to preserve the wine’s sense of place.
Terroir and vineyards
Tenuta Il Greppo is located in the municipality of Montalcino, an area of Tuscany particularly known for Sangiovese and for the production of Brunello di Montalcino.
