Horseshoe Distillery

Herradura has a wonderful history that begins in 1880, when Don Jose Feliciano bought a colonial estate (hacienda) in the Amatitan valley in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

In the vicinity of the hacienda, only the best qualities of blue agave were grown. Thus came the idea of starting a family business for the production of tequila. The first owners of the company did not want to spend money for the state permit that made it possible to distribute alcohol, so tequila initially had a limited market.

Everything changed when the daughter became engaged to the son of Don José Aurelio Lopez Rosales, an excellent tequilero who modernized the production processes with new technologies, reaching a completely new level.

It is said that once Rosales found a horseshoe near his possessions that shone in the sun, like a gold ingot; the family took the auspicious find and decided to call their company Herradura.

The horseshoe brand became a corporate emblem and was registered in 1928. When Mexico was ravaged by social and revolutionary turmoil, the owner of the company had to flee the state and the management of the company passed to his cousin Aurelio David Rosales.

Today the Tequila Herradura manufacturing company is owned by Grupo Industrial Herradura, a large producer that also owns blue agave plantations located in the states of Nayarit and Jalisco (Mexico). Exclusively here, on red-brown soils enriched with iron, agave of the highest grade is grown, a special basis for producing premium Mexican spirits.
