Monchiero Carbone Winery
The Monchiero Carbone company is located in Canale, in the center of the town, in an old nineteenth-century stately farmhouse, which houses a large and fascinating historic cellar in its basement, intact for over two centuries. The company owes its name to the union of two families, thanks to the marriage between Marco Monchiero and Lucia Carbone, and the consequent union of the vineyards inherited by both. The origins and links with the winegrowing profession, however, are to be found in the past, between the members of the two families.
The progenitor was Clotilde Valbody, great-grandmother of the Monchiero branch. than in 1918 he decided to buy the Mombirone vineyard, which he then cultivated throughout his life, giving birth to the historic family wine, Barbera d’Alba MonBirone. We are always at the beginning of the 20th century when the great-grandfather Enrico Carbone marries the young Lucia Gioetti, daughter of the wealthy sharecropper of the Count of Canale who brings as a dowry an accurate trousseau and a good sum of money, which is obviously destined for the purchase of land. on the Tanon hill where they immediately planted an Arneis vineyard. These are some anecdotes that reveal how in the past the ancestors of both families were linked to the world of viticulture.
And the 1987 When Marco Monchiero, nationally renowned winemaker, and his wife Lucia Carbone decide to buy the large farmhouse in via S. Stefano Roero. Also in those years the son Francesco Monchiero, born in 1975, already had very clear ideas: “when he grew up” he would have liked to produce his wines by creating his own brand.
This is how the history of the Monchiero Carbone winery begins, thanks to the young enterprising Francesco who makes his first vintage in 1990 with the help of his father Marco. In 1994 the Roero Arneis, the autochthonous white of Roero that immediately fascinated Francesco, aware of the long road of research and experimentation that he would have to undertake to bring out a still semi-unknown native vine.
Over the years the company has developed, thanks to the expansion of the winemaking cellar in 2004 and the acquisition of new vineyards, giving the utmost importance to the choice of land, identified with extreme accuracy, as they are recognized as the true architects of the quality of wines.
