The Madeira Malvasia 10-year Malmsey by Henriques & Henriques represents an outstanding example of the winemaking tradition of Madeira Island, an area renowned for its fortified wines of extraordinary longevity and complexity. This wine is a Malvasia (also known as Malmsey in English), one of the most prized varieties among Madeira wines, famous for its rich aromatic profile and intense sweetness.
Grown on the volcanic slopes of Madeira, the Malvasia grapes benefit from the island's unique microclimate, which significantly contributes to the formation of their characteristic aroma and flavor. After harvesting, the grapes undergo a fermentation process that is interrupted by the addition of wine alcohol, to preserve some of the grapes' natural sugar.
The Madeira Malvasia 10-year Malmsey is aged for at least ten years in the "Canteiro" system, which involves maturation in wooden barrels in environments with naturally high temperatures. This method contributes to the wine's evolution, endowing it with intense flavors of ripe fruit, notes of toast, coffee, caramel, and a touch of exotic spices.
Visually, it presents a deep amber color. On the nose, it offers an intense bouquet with clear notes of dried fruit, such as figs and dates, enriched by nuances of molasses and chocolate. On the palate, it stands out for its excellent structure and balance, with a persistent finish that leaves room for sensations of candied fruit and hazelnut.
Served at a temperature of about 16-18°C (61-64°F), the Madeira Malvasia 10-year Malmsey pairs beautifully with rich desserts, blue cheeses, or as an after-dinner meditation. A true gem for lovers of sweet and complex wines, demonstrating the skill and tradition of the Henriques & Henriques house.
