Montebuono by Lino Maga is a red wine presenting a measured profile and notable for its pleasant everyday character. With an intense ruby color, it displays a bouquet suggesting red fruit and delicate spice notes, without excess. On the palate it shows balance between substance and freshness, with tannins present but smoothed; the structure is enough to support the tasting without overpowering drinkability. The sensory approach is straightforward and genuine, suited to those seeking a versatile, not overly complex red.

It pairs well with uncomplicated dishes such as flavorful white meats, cold cuts and semi-soft cheeses, and also stands up to heartier preparations in moderate portions. Recommended serving temperature is around 16–18 °C and a large glass that favors breathing; if preferred, brief decanting to open up. It is a wine intended for everyday use and convivial moments, leaving room for personal preferences in pairing.

Azienda Agricola Barbacarlo (Lino Maga) — a historic estate in Oltrepò Pavese (Broni), producer of the single‑vineyard wines Barbacarlo and Montebuono. Red wines from local varieties made with traditional, low‑intervention methods; limited production.
Region: Lombardy (Oltrepò Pavese, province of Pavia)
Country: Italy
Winery history
The Maga family has farmed vineyards around Broni since 1886. Lino Maga was the estate’s best‑known figure and central to the reputation of the wines (especially Barbacarlo). Lino Maga died on January 2, 2022. The estate is noted for very limited production (under 10,000 bottles/year) and for its two historic single‑vineyard wines, Barbacarlo and Montebuono.
Production philosophy
Traditional, low‑intervention approach: hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, maceration and aging in large casks/foudres and old oak, often bottled unfined and unfiltered; minimal enological intervention (limited SO2). Vineyard work with low chemical input.
Terroir and vineyards
Hills of Oltrepò Pavese (Broni and nearby communes, province of Pavia): tufaceous/stony soils, steep slopes and sunny exposures (south/south‑west). Old vines on the historic single‑vineyard sites Barbacarlo and Montebuono.
