“Mesccia” has its roots in an ancient Monegasque tradition dating back to the 17th century: a blend of Caribbean rums, brought to Monaco by Genoese sailors, and European liqueurs such as Vermouth and Marsala. Today, the Principality of Monaco and Velier reinterpret this tradition in a contemporary way, selecting high-quality rums and aging them in barrels previously used for Vermouth.
A Mesccia Vieux was born from the Prince’s desire to revive a product deeply connected to the history of the Principality, through a project developed together with Luca Gargano, one of the world’s most authoritative rum experts.
Production begins with prized Crystalline sugar cane, grown in the Grand Cru of Saint-Michel-de-l’Attalaye, Haiti. The pure cane juice undergoes a long fermentation with wild yeasts, followed by a first distillation in a water bath in a pot still at the Port-au-Prince distillery.
The distillate is then transferred to Monaco-Monte Carlo, where a second distillation takes place in a Khote still at L’Orangerie – Distillerie de Monaco. It is through this process and the subsequent aging that A Mesccia Vieux acquires its distinctive character, bringing together the Caribbean tradition of rum and the history and liqueur-making culture of Monaco.
