This Spätburgunder, the German name for Pinot Noir, is presented as a VDP Gutswein. Within the VDP system, this category identifies wines from the estate. The producer listed is Fürstlich Castell’sches Domänenamt. It is a red wine made from a single grape variety: an opportunity to explore the German expression of Pinot Noir without relying on unprovided details about vintage or ageing.

In general, Pinot Noir is valued for its versatility at the table and for a profile that can be fine and restrained. As no specific tasting information is available for this bottle, these characteristics should be taken as references to the grape variety rather than as definite tasting notes. Depending on personal preference, it may pair well with straightforward meat dishes, mushroom-based preparations or moderately flavoured cheeses. The VDP Gutswein designation and the grape name provide the essential points of reference when choosing the wine. For further details about its style and serving, consult the label or information supplied by the producer.

A family winery in Castell, Franconia, with 26 generations of winemaking history and VDP membership. Silvaner is at the heart of its work.
Region: Franconia (Franken)
Country: Germany
Winery history
The family has been involved in winegrowing in Castell for 26 generations. In 1659, Germany’s first documented Silvaner vines were planted there. In 1955, the estate joined the association of natural-wine producers, which later became the VDP; in 1974, it was a founding member of VDP.Franken.
Production philosophy
The estate emphasizes origin and the character of each vineyard, with a focus on healthy soils and a low-intervention cellar approach. Silvaner is central to its work; for single-vineyard wines, the estate describes predominantly spontaneous fermentation and extended lees ageing in large wooden casks.
Terroir and vineyards
The vineyards surround the wine village of Castell in the Steigerwald. The soils are predominantly gypsum keuper marl, and the estate also farms VDP-classified vineyard sites around the village.
