Cultivation takes place following the espalier training method with spurred cordon pruning. The harvest takes place manually in two separate phases, with a careful selection of the best grapes. After pressing and destemming the selected grapes, fermentation begins at temperatures between 28°C and 30°C. The complete maceration process takes place in steel tanks for 16-20 days, with automatic punching down and daily pumping over.

In March-April, the newly formed wine is transferred to new, first-use French oak barriques. After a maturation period of 18-22 months, we proceed with assembly and bottling. The wine continues to refine in glass for at least 8-12 months before being put on sale.

Fontalloro has a ruby red color of good intensity. Its aromatic characteristics are complex, with evident notes of tobacco, wet earth, blackcurrant, blackberry and liquorice. On the palate, the wine reveals good tannins and a medium soft tannin consistency. Its consistency, structure and elegance emerge in the aftertaste, guaranteeing excellent longevity in the most important vintages.

Winery history
The modern history of the estate took shape in 1966 when Domenico Poggiali purchased the property and began a quality-focused renewal. In the following years the Poggiali family, with the support of winemaking consultants and technicians, developed the vineyards and introduced new winemaking techniques; from the 1980s and 1990s emerged the selections that defined flagship wines such as Fontalloro, Rancia and Colonia.
Production philosophy
Production focused on enhancing native Sangiovese through massal selections, respect for the land and agricultural practices that preserve biodiversity. The estate combines tradition and innovation in the vineyard and cellar, with a focus on traceability and dedicated projects for olive oil as well.
Terroir and vineyards
The estate is located on the southeastern edge of the Chianti Classico appellation, in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in a transition zone toward the Crete Senesi and the Ombrone valley. The soils are typically calcareous and comprised of laminated marls with sandstone layers, which contribute to the wines' character. The entire property covers extensive grounds, with a portion dedicated to vineyards; the estate uses multiple crus and on-site microclimates to differentiate its labels.
