St. Henri by Penfolds is an icon of Australian winemaking, a red wine that stands out for its unique style and elegance. Unlike most of the high-end wines produced by Penfolds, which are matured in new oak barriques, St. Henri favors aging in large old oak barrels, a practice that allows the wine to develop complexity and depth without adding dominant notes of wood. This approach emphasizes fruit quality and varietal purity, maintaining a fresher, fruitier flavor profile.
First produced in the 1950s, St. Henri is primarily made from Shiraz, with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, depending on the vintage. The grapes are sourced from several South Australian wine regions, including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and others, contributing to the wine's complexity and layering of flavours.
St. Henri stands out for its deep and intense color. On the nose, it offers a rich bouquet of aromas, with notes of ripe black fruit, such as plums and blackberries, accompanied by nuances of spices, chocolate and a light balsamic touch. In the mouth, the wine is powerful but balanced, with ripe and well-integrated tannins that support a full structure. The characteristic freshness of the fruit combines with an aromatic complexity that evolves into a long and persistent finish.
Aging in old oak barrels allows St. Henri to develop a distinctive character and smoothness that makes it accessible at a young age, while still having considerable aging potential. This combination of immediate accessibility and the ability to evolve over time is one of the reasons why St. Henri is so prized by connoisseurs around the world.
Ideal in combination with dishes rich in meat, such as braises, roasts and grills, Penfolds' St. Henri represents an emblematic expression of Australian winemaking style and mastery, offering a tasting experience that combines intensity, elegance and complexity.
