Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Barley malt wetted with water from the Kilbride Stream, germinated on traditional malting floors and then dried with peat smoke (cold-smoking). Mashing and fermentation with selected yeasts; double distillation in copper pot stills (a set of seven stills: three wash stills and four spirit stills). The spirit is brought to cask proof (63.5% ABV) and matured in oak casks in warehouses exposed to the sea air.

Distillation

Double distillation in copper pot stills (pot still); the plant comprises seven stills (3 wash, 4 spirit) with high lyne arms and cut points designed to preserve tarry and maritime notes.

Ageing

Maturation in oak casks in coastal warehouses; seasonal variation (expansion in summer, contraction in winter) promotes interaction between wood and spirit. Frequent use of ex-bourbon for the base with finishes or re-racking in different wood types for specific expressions.

Producer history Laphroaig

Founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston on Islay's south coast, Laphroaig has grown into one of the most iconic expressions of Islay single malt. Over the centuries the distillery underwent periods of expansion, local disputes over water and various changes of ownership; figures such as Ian Hunter and Bessie Williamson played important roles in its stylistic and commercial development. In 1994 Laphroaig received a Royal Warrant and in the same year the "Friends of Laphroaig" program for enthusiasts was established.

Production philosophy

To convey a strong sense of place in every bottle: the organoleptic profile should reflect Islay's coast — marine peat, iodine, salinity and the sweetness of wood. Tradition, respect for local raw materials and careful attention to maturation techniques are central to production.

Territory

Islay island, southern coast; Atlantic climate that imparts maritime influences and affects the maturation of the casks.
