Franz Haas Lagrein Alto Adige DOC is made from one of Alto Adige’s most representative native grape varieties. The grapes grow in sunny sites between 220 and 250 metres above sea level, on warm, deep alluvial soils with a high proportion of gravel and south- to southwest-facing exposure. These microclimatic conditions allow this late-ripening variety to reach full maturity. In the glass, the wine shows a deep, intense red colour, sometimes with violet notes. Its broad, expressive bouquet ranges from ripe red fruit to violets, spices, fresh grass and cocoa.
On the palate, it offers a decisive personality, massive yet velvety tannins, pleasing fullness and a long, captivating finish. After careful selection in the vineyard, the grapes are gently destemmed and fermented in open-top vats. To avoid excessive tannin extraction, remontage and punching down are kept limited. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to tonneau, where malolactic fermentation and maturation take place for 10 to 12 months, followed by several months of bottle ageing. It can be enjoyed young, while further bottle refinement makes it softer and rounder. Serve at 16-18 °C with rich, flavoursome dishes or grilled red meat.
