Region: Rheingau; Mosel
Country: Germany
Founded: 1882
Grapes: Riesling, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir)
Family-owned, multi-generational winery based in Oestrich‑Winkel. A focused portfolio of long-lived Rieslings and premium Pinot Noirs from Assmannshausen. Vineyard holdings: approximately 41.4 ha in the Rheingau and 12 ha on the Mosel, plus about 3 ha of Pinot Noir from Krone Assmannshausen. Production structured according to the VDP classification, featuring Grosse Lage wines and an iconic wine produced from blends of prestigious vineyards. Quality-oriented practices: hand harvesting, selection, and extended aging in the cellar.
Winery history
The company's roots go back to the work of Julius Wegeler, who, at the end of the 19th century, transformed his business from a merchant and sparkling wine producer into a winery with its own vineyards in the Rheingau and the Moselle. Over time the family has expanded its holdings of prestigious vineyards and has preserved the tradition of storing and aging wines in the cellar prior to their release.
Production philosophy
Priority is given to quality and origin: selective hand harvesting, vineyard practices focused on sustainability, and extended periods of cellar aging. The estate follows the VDP quality scale and emphasizes low yields and rigorous selection for its top-tier wines.
Terroir and vineyards
Historic vineyards both on the banks of the Rhine and the Moselle, with parcels classified LAGE and LAGE. Recurring mentions include well-known crus such as Bernkasteler Doctor, Rothenberg and Sonnenuhr; exposures and soils range from slate to the more complex soils of the Rheingau.
Awards and recognitions
Member of the VDP. Named "Winery of the Year" in the Rheingau by Vinum Weinguide, according to industry sources.
