The Rosso Alta Valle della Greve IGT “Il Carbonaione” by Poggio Scalette is a wine of exceptional expression and finesse, embodying the authentic spirit of Tuscany. Born from the vineyards located in one of the most prestigious areas of the region, this wine is primarily made from Sangiovese grapes, carefully selected from old plants that deeply root in the fertile soils of Greve in Chianti.

Its winemaking follows traditional methods with an innovative touch, including fermentation in steel tanks followed by a long aging in French oak barriques. This process gives “Il Carbonaione” a complex structure and a perfect harmony between soft tannins and rich aromas of ripe fruits, spices, and a slight balsamic note.

With a deep ruby color, this wine offers intense scents of blackberries, plums, and cocoa on the nose, enriched by nuances of tobacco and leather. On the palate, it is full, enveloping, and persistently elegant, with a long finish that revisits the tones of ripe and spiced fruit.

Ideal to pair with rich meat dishes, such as roasts and stews, “Il Carbonaione” by Poggio Scalette also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses and mushroom-based dishes. It is a wine for meditation, that can also be enjoyed alone, reflecting on its evolution in the glass.

This wine not only represents an excellent choice for connoisseurs but can also be considered a precious gift for those wishing to discover an authentic jewel of Tuscan viticulture.

Historic vineyards of the cru "Il Carbonaione" with Sangiovese di Lamole vines of considerable age. Product range: Il Carbonaione, Chianti Classico, Capogatto, Piantonaia, Chiara Aurora, Richiari and the oil Il Corto. Terraced vineyards at 350–550 m above sea level with dry-stone walls typical of the area. Estate production featured in wine guides and specialist magazines.
Winery history
The current Podere Poggio Scalette originated from the restoration of an abandoned property on the Ruffoli hill: Vittorio Fiore and his wife Adriana Assjè di Marcorà acquired the land in the early 1990s, establishing the estate as an independent concern in 1991 and expanding it with subsequent acquisitions in 1996. Over time the Fiore family has enhanced historic vineyards — in particular the cru known as "Il Carbonaione" — restoring the terraced plots to production and developing a range of IGT and Chianti Classico DOCG wines.
Production philosophy
Production focused on expressing the territory: respect for the terraced soils and historic vineyards, with careful work in the vineyard and cellar to produce wines that reflect the altitude and exposure of Ruffoli’s vineyards. The estate states an approach rooted in a passion for the land, the vine and people, with attention to the local terroir.
Terroir and vineyards
The vineyards are located in the Alta Valle della Greve area, between 350 and 550 m above sea level, on terraced slopes characterized by sandy soils with a stony content; the hill of Ruffoli is considered one of the best areas of the Val di Greve for growing vines and olives.
