Sharp and maritime, this Caol Ila 2014 from Douglas Laing’s Premier Barrel moves naturally between restrained peat and iodic freshness. On the palate a gentle smoke emerges that doesn't insist, leaving room for notes of light malt, citrus zest and a saline minerality that recalls the coastal breeze. The texture is lean but present: the structure supports the character well without weighing it down, and the finish stays clean, with smoky echoes that extend into the aftertaste. It’s a whisky to sip attentively: it suits moments of contemplation or simple pairings where the smoke can converse without overpowering.

A few drops of water open up the aromas and soften the edges; in the kitchen it pairs well with shellfish, smoked fish or a dark chocolate that isn’t overly sweet. The boxed bottle also makes it a suitable gift for those who appreciate marine single malts that are direct and well balanced.
