Glen Scotia is a historic single malt Scotch whisky distillery based in Campbeltown (Kintyre, Scotland), known for expressing the maritime character typical of the region and for a range that includes core releases, travel retail editions and vintage bottlings.
Campbeltown · Campbeltown / Argyll (Kintyre) · United Kingdom
The distillery was founded as Scotia Distillery in 1832 and, despite the many ups and downs of the local industry, has remained one of the few production sites in Campbeltown. Over time it has preserved period structural elements (cast-iron mashtun, washbacks, stillhouse and dunnage warehouse) and today is part of the Loch Lomond Group, which manages its production and commercialisation.
Production philosophy
Production oriented to the Campbeltown tradition: preserving local character through artisanal methods, on-site maturation and a balance between American (bourbon) casks and sherry or other wood finishes to enrich the aromatic profile without overpowering the malt signature.
Territory
Campbeltown, Kintyre Peninsula, Argyll, Scotland (United Kingdom). Official address: 12 High Street, Campbeltown PA28 6DS.
Awards and recognition
Glen Scotia 25 Year Old: Best in Show, San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2021; Glen Scotia cited as 'Scotland’s Whisky Distillery of the Year 2021' in official communications.
Production method
Traditional single malt production: weekly arrival of malted barley, milling, mashing in a historic cast-iron mashtun, extended fermentation in washbacks, double distillation and maturation in on-site dunnage warehouses. The water used comes from Crosshill Loch.
Distillation
Traditional double distillation in copper pot stills, collecting the new make at around 71% ABV and filling casks at about 63.5% ABV.
Ageing
Maturation in casks with on-site ageing in dunnage warehouses, with assemblies and finishes for some expressions.
