Winery history Château Climens

The name Climens appears in documents as early as 1547; ownership passed over time to the Roborel de Climens, Binaud and Gounouilhou families and, in 1971, to the Lurton family. Management was later entrusted to Bérénice Lurton and, more recently, ownership passed to the Moitry family, with technical and winemaking continuity ensured by the estate’s long-standing team. Château Climens was recognized as a Premier Cru in the 1855 classification.

Production philosophy

Search for purity and elegance expressed through the enhancement of the terroir: Climens emphasizes the mineral character of its limestone soils and has undertaken a conversion to biodynamic viticulture to promote vigor and aromatic precision; the estate also values biodiversity-related practices.

Terroir and vineyards

Vineyard situated on a plateau in Barsac, characterized by superficial red iron-rich sands over a fractured limestone slab. The microclimate, linked to morning mists from the Ciron River and the afternoon sun, favors the development of Botrytis cinerea, the basis of the sweet wines of Sauternes/Barsac.
