Winery history Château Léoville Poyferré

The estate traces its origins to the former domain of Léoville; the portion that became Léoville Poyferré took its name in 1840 when Baron Jean‑Marie de Poyferré became associated with it. Listed as a Second Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, the vineyard changed hands several times in the 19th century and was purchased by the Cuvelier family in 1920, who remain its owners. In recent decades the family management has carried out cellar modernizations and initiatives to enhance the estate and its wine tourism.

Production philosophy

Enhancing the territory and quality through careful agricultural practices and parcel-by-parcel winemaking. The estate declares an approach focused on environmental respect, with systemic management and reduced interventions where possible; it uses controlled vinification in temperature-controlled tanks and wood aging aimed at balancing fruit and structure.

Terroir and vineyards

Situated in Saint-Julien‑Beychevelle, the estate occupies several blocks of gravelly and sandy soils shaped by the Gironde estuary. The main vineyard extends over gravel terrace soils with a sandy‑clay subsoil and comprises distinct plots, including the 20 hectares of the neighboring Château Moulin Riche.
