The structure known as Black Friars dates back to medieval parts (the Refectory Room built in 1431) and production of Plymouth Gin on the site is documented since 1793. The activity was historically linked to Coates & Co.; in the 21st century ownership passed to the V&S group and subsequently became part of the Pernod Ricard group. Over the years the distillery has remained a production centre and tourist attraction in the Barbican area of Plymouth.
