Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Slow fermentations in wooden washbacks and distillation in pot stills with tall, narrow necks, aiming to preserve cleanliness and complexity of the new spirit (mention of 'trickle distillation' and an unfiltered approach). Gin production includes maceration/infusion of botanicals and, for some expressions, a period of cask rest (cask-rested).

Distillation

Distillation in pot stills with tall, narrow necks, with slow fermentations in wooden washbacks; for gin, maceration/infusion of botanicals followed by distillation; some methods aimed at preserving character without chill-filtration or added colour.

Ageing

Maturation in various casks (warehoused on the island), using different wood types and quality finishes; some gin editions are rested in casks (cask-rested).

Producer history Bruichladdich

Originally built in the late 19th century, the historic Bruichladdich complex was rebuilt and relaunched in the early 2000s. After periods of closure in the 20th century the distillery was revived by a relaunch team in 2001; in 2012 it became part of the Rémy Cointreau group. In recent years it has developed barley origin programmes and terroir research, and launched the gin The Botanist.

Production philosophy

Strong focus on raw material provenance (100% Scottish barley), close relationships with local farmers and the application of terroir to whisky. Commitment to responsible and sustainable practices, measured through social and environmental impact certifications.
